According to Research Company HIS iSuppli, the PC market will contract by 1.2% during 2012, dropping to a total sale of 348.7 million units world-wide.  This is further supported by the 3rd quarter  PC Sales as reported on by MyBroadband - Daily Tech Newsletter 20/10/2012.  The numbers as tabled below shows a Q3 8,3% decline compared against Q3 2011.  Only the strong laptop vendors like Lenovo and ASUS had any growth year-on-year in the number of units shipped.

According to a survey conducted by the Online Publishers Association (OPA) in March 2012, 31% of Internet users in the United States own a tablet, up from 12% in 2011. The OPA estimates that tablet ownership among the U.S. Internet population will rise to 47%. The survey also found that 72% of tablet owners had an iPad, while 32% had an Android tablet in 2011; and by 2012, Android tablet adoption had increased, with 52% of tablet owners using an iPad, while 51% use an Android-powered tablet. The percentages do not add up to 100% because some tablet owners own/use more than one type of tablet.

This move towards mobility is also evident in the TV market, A recent (21 May and 1 June 2012) study by Discovery Networks called “The rise of television everywhere” revealed the following regarding the South African television viewer:

  • 31% watched live TV via an Internet connection in the past 6 months;
  • 31% watched or downloaded video-on-demand (VOD) after the original broadcast in the past 6 months;
  • 74% have a smartphone;
  • 31% have a tablet;
  • 15% watched live TV via an Internet connection on their tablet;
  • 17% watched or downloaded TV on demand;
  • 72% of early adopters were interested in accessing TV content on the go via a smartphone or tablet, while 43% of other users were interested in this;
  • 33% said they use the Internet to post about a TV show on social networks or look up information about the show online

The implications of this move to mobile devices are primarily in the areas of security and infrastructure management. It also forces a business to consider Wi-Fi networks. Because the mobile phones and tablet PC’s are mostly owned by individuals, the business cannot prescribe a specific brand or technology. Because of these implications, Pivotel’s solutions in the mobile space focus on security, multi-device management and on the development of a mobile strategy for your business. This is further underpinned by Pivotel’s experience in the Wi-Fi / Wireless network space.

Multi-User for shared IOS devices

The largest companies in the world trust MobileIron®  as their foundation for Mobile IT. Available as a highly-scalable on-premise or cloud solution, MobileIron was purpose-built to secure and manage mobile apps, documents, and devices. MobileIron was the first to deliver key innovations such as multi-OS mobile device management (MDM), mobile application management (MAM), and BYOD privacy.

MobileIron’s multi-user capability is a recent innovation that allows organizations across  industries to deploy iOS devices for use by multiple individuals:

  • Education: iPads are becoming the new standard of computing  in the classroom. New curricula rely on each student having tablet access to learn, review, and  test. Fast switching between students is essential because one device can be used by many students during the course of just one day.
  • Healthcare: Mobile is improving patient care and operational efficiency. In hospitals and  clinics, multiple medical professionals will use the same device. Because of the sensitivity of healthcare data, the device must always remain under management with enforced security policies even between users.
  • Retail: Mobile apps are changing point-of-sales and logistics processes for retailers. These apps generally run on corporate-owned devices shared by multiple end users. Because turnover across the employee base can be quite high, multi-user capabilities must be easy to use and require minimal training.
  • Hospitality: Mobile is taking paper out of the property management process.Connectivity settings are usually shared across shift-based users, but apps and email settings are user-specific. Both need to be managed seamlessly.

Speed,  security, and personalization are the core requirements for a scalable multi-user mobile  deployment. Traditional approaches that un-enroll and re-enroll the entire device, instead of just the user, are slow, not secure, and complex to troubleshoot. The MobileIron approach is fast, secure, and simple for the user and is part of the MobileIron Advanced Management and Connected Cloud solutions.
